Lamb drives to San Francisco and walks down the Embarcadero to watch the seals swim in the bay. He sees their shadows spin beneath the surface of the water, then disappear. He touches his knuckles together and wonders how he feels. He looks at his knuckles and rubs them against his cheek. He stares into the water and wonders what it would feel like on his face. He squints and everything becomes blurry. Lamb thinks, “This water is rancid but it is only water.” He watches the current spiral out from the land to the other side of the bay. He feels tall buildings of the city behind him and long bridges connecting the city to other cities. Lamb thinks, “Everyone likes bridges.” He feels the planet tilt one way, then another.
